Walter S. Barr Scholarships for Students in H.S.
These awards for undergraduate education are made annually by the Scholarship Committee to residents of Hampden County, MA who are members of the senior class at their local public or private secondary schools.
Awards are based on school records, college entrance examinations, general attainments and financial need. Awards will be continued through the four year course if the student’s record and need justify such continuance. Awards will be made on the basis of all available information, including school records, recommendations and examination scores. Consideration will be given to both the merit and financial need of the applicant.
Instructions for Walter S. Barr Scholarship Applicants about to Enter College and Their Parents
- Complete and submit the scholarship application on-line or by mail.
- Three persons, not relatives, should complete reference forms for you. At least two references should be a high school guidance counselor or teacher, who is familiar with your ability and potential. Completed reference forms can be submitted on-line or mailed to the Walter S. Barr Scholarship Committee, at the address above.
- The confidential financial statement must be completed by the applicant’s parents. Completed financial statement form can be submitted on-line or mailed to the Walter S. Barr Scholarship Committee, at the address above. Or the applicant may instead submit a copy of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- The applicant is responsible for having a high school transcript mailed to:

- Applicants are expected to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of the College Entrance Examination Board, if they have not already done so.
- SAT scores should be noted on the high school transcript.
- To enhance your application, you may also send us a copy of your most recent MCAS test report and ACT assessment student report.
- Completed application, letters of reference and parents financial statement must be received in the Horace Smith Fund office no later than December 20th.
